28th April 2009,

Australian Deaflympic Training Camp A Huge Success!

With the Taipei 2009 Deaflympic Games now only 129 days away, the Australian Deaflympic Team had the opportunity to gather at a pre-Deaflympic Games Training Camp which was held in Melbourne on the weekend of 25 – 26 April.

The training camp featured information sessions on athlete requirements, what to expect in Taipei and how to prepare for the Games. Following the information sessions the team then undertook individual training sessions before a formal team dinner was held.

The weekend’s proceedings commenced with Angie Darby, Beijing Olympian & Pentathlete, delivering an inspirational speech to the team members about what it takes to prepare for an international competition. Angie was able to provide a unique insight into her rigorous training schedule as well as the struggle to fundraise in order to help her achieve her goals in competing at the Beijing Games. She also provided tips on how to survive the extreme conditions as Taipei is likely to have similar weather to Beijing. The advice Angie provided was invaluable information for our athletes preparing for the upcoming Games.

The team training sessions were conducted at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre (Basketball, Table Tennis & Swimming), Melbourne Park (Tennis), Murrumbeena Athletics Club (Athletics) & Dominance Martial Arts Club (Judo). The Cycling Team conducted their training sessions along various road routes around Melbourne. The training sessions were of high intensity and the chance to bring all our athletes together in one location to train was invaluable.

During the ADT Dinner which was held at the Beachcomber Café at St Kilda, former Deaflympian Scott Prosser spoke about his experiences from the 1997 and 2005 Deaflympic Games. As a former Deaflympic Gold Medalist Scott was able to pass on many valuable tips about how to deal with the pressure of competition and still perform at your best.
