Deaf Sports Australia to identify more female leaders in Sport

Deaf Sports Australia has successfully applied for funding from the Australian Sports Commission's 2009 Sport Leadership Grants and Scholarships for Women Program.

The $9,000 funding grant will allow DSA to hold a 2 day summit to discuss and address issues facing the lack of female representation in management and Board positions within the deaf sports community and develop strategies to attract more female leaders in the future.

The end result of the Summit will be the development of a strategy, signed off by all DSA Stakeholders for the future development of female leadership within the deaf sports community.

Deaf Sports Australia President Brent Phillips says the Summit will help identify the next generation of female leaders in deaf sport.

“It is vital for the future that we identify more female leaders to help shape the direction of sport and the opportunity to bring together our key stakeholders at the Summit is a great step forward.”

Status of Women Minister Tanya Plibersek and Sports Minister Kate Ellis announced the successful applicants on 3 July. Now in its eighth year, the initiative provides support for women to pursue accredited training and development in coaching, officiating, governance, media and communications and management.

To date, around $3 million in grants have helped close to 16,000 women develop high level skills in their sport across the nation.

Minister Ellis said the grants would accelerate the careers of women in sport. 'Australian sport needs more women involved in senior positions and leadership roles, These grants will equip and empower women to fill more decision-making roles and exert greater influence in the culture of sport.’

Deaf Sports Australia is currently planning the summit and more information will be available shortly.
