Coast tennis star off to Deaflympics

15th July 2009 | By Brigitte Short - Sunshine Coast Daily

Australian tennis players may have returned empty handed from Wimbledon, but Jamie Zafir, of Mooloolaba, hopes to restore some pride to our international performances.

In 53 days, the 22 year old will set off on his first overseas journey, but not to kick back in Bali or run wild in Europe. Jamie will represent Australia at the 2009 Deaflympic Games in Taipei, where deaf athletes from across the world will compete against each other in their chosen sport.

To qualify, he had to defeat the top Australian deaf player at the recent Australian Deaf Games.

“I was very happy with my performance. I'm definitely excited to be able to represent Australia at the Deaflympics,” Jamie said.

A keen player since he was 10, Jamie said tennis was the sport most suited to him.

“I think about tennis all the time,” he said. “Every time I go to sleep I dream of tennis. I'll probably die with tennis on my mind.”

Jamie will play in the men's singles and doubles at the games in September.

His preparation will not be helped by the fact that he is without a coach. Compounding that, the rest of the team, including his doubles partner, John Lui, is scattered across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

“We go over in groups and have a week of training before the actual games start,” Jamie said.

As well as living and breathing tennis, the high achiever is just one semester away from completing a degree in computer based art and design at University of the Sunshine Coast.

Jamie has used what he has learnt so far to create videos, logos and advertisements for Deaf Tennis Australia.

The 35th Southern Cross Shield 10-12th Apr 2009

Last weekend saw Deaf Football Australia host their 35th Southern Cross Shield at the picturesque fields of Ted Horwood Reserve Baulkham Hills.

All teams had some problems with being too cautious, over defensive, boring, uncharismatic or out of their depth. But it was the final game of NSW vs. Victoria that had everyone biting fingernails as to who would win the Championship. It came down to NSW needing a win or draw to retain the Shield, but it was the hard, gritty and nothing to lose attitude that got Victoria the win over NSW. This year's tournament saw the entry of Northern New South Wales enter the competition, as rivals to NSW. They lived the under-dog status throughout the tournament and they were crowned champions of the tournament by a single goal difference. Of course the NSW Squad were gutted and gracious in defeat, but it was the goal difference that was the heartbreaking effect on the team.

Former Socceroos and National coaches Abbas Saad and Robert Stanton watched each game intently as they do making notes and plotting player positions for future international tournaments.

This Southern Cross tournament saw a tsunami of new talent from each of the states. Both coaches surprised by what they saw this weekend, compared to what they have seen in the past.

On average there was about 300 people watching the tournament each day. The tournament ran from 10th - 13th April and it was a grand success in terms of support, volunteers and the whole event management. There were some past players and members attending and volunteering their time to help fundraise.

The women's competition also saw a lot of new talent coming in and the national coach had a wealth of choice to pick for the national squad. On the fine morning of Saturday, players were picked from New South Wales and Queensland to represent Australia to play against the other women that didn't make the squad. That was a strong and fiery match, as all the girls had a point to prove!

The Southern Cross Shield was an opportunity for all players, men and women, to prove their status. It was certainly in the eyes of everyone that each state had their own respective best and fairest players. But there was one player that stood out from the rest and it was a unanimous choice. Mohammed Aber from Victoria won the Australian Best and Fairest award, as he managed to stifle all the attacking prowess of NSW, Queensland and North NSW. If there was any player that had the never say die spirit and biggest heart of all - it was Mohammed Aber. Brad Schofield won the best and fairest for Queensland, Mark Davis for North NSW, and Christopher Vassilopoulos for NSW.

The highlight of the weekend was the visitation of SBS's Football Superstars of Tomorrow and they interviewed players from each state. The interview and highlights will be aired on SBS - on Sunday 19th April at 5pm.

The 36th Southern Cross Shield will be hosted in Melbourne 2010 where there will be a lot of retribution and glory to be achieved by all.

The 17th Australian Deaf Golf Championships

Deaf Golf Australia along with New South Wales Deaf Golf Association were the proud hosts of the 17th Australian Deaf Golf Championships, at Pacific Dunes at Newcastle, NSW, over the Easter Weekend (10-13 April 2009). Pacific Dunes proved to be a stern but fair test of golf with the front nine in thick forest, and the back nine surrounded by water !

This tournament was attended by 35 golfers from 5 states, broken down with 10 golfers from Victoria, 8 from NSW, 7 from Western Australia, 6 from Tasmania and 4 from Queensland.

Jack Besley, a 16 year old from Melbourne, in his first Australian Deaf Golf Championships, belied his youth to shoot rounds of 77,69, 76 to finish 14 shots in front of the current World Deaf Golf Champion, Denver Magnusson also from Victoria after
rounds of 77,77,82. Mark Aird of Queensland finished third after rounds of 87,84,77.

In the hotly competed teams championships, Victoria backed up its win at the 2008 Australian Deaf Golf Championships (held at Australian Deaf Games in Gold Coast) and finished 24 shots in front of NSW with a score of 996. The Victorian team comprised of Jack Besley, Denver Magnusson, Raymond Reid, Gary Kerridge, Gavin Balharrie and Thomas Beggs (Captain). NSW finished second on 1020 and Western Australia in 1129.

Tony Klimek of WA, won the Seniors Championship (over 50 years old) with a score of 255 from Alan Bitters (WA) on 261.

Simon Hogan, from Deniliquin in NSW, won the Nett Championships with a score of 221 from Tony Klimek (WA) 222 and Ray McGuiness (NSW) of 226.

This tournament also doubled as the selection trial for the 2010 World Deaf Golf Championships which will be held at the 'home' of golf at St Andrews in Scotland. The Australian Team of 6 players based on the top 6 scores were :-

  • Jack Besley, Victoria
  • Denver Magnusson, Victoria
  • Mark Aird, Queensland
  • Luke Ellis, NSW
  • Ray McGuiness, NSW
  • Craig Douglas, NSW

Thanks must be conveyed to Wendy Home (tournament co-ordinator), Craig Douglas / Robert Bowler (NSW Deaf Golf Association), Jessica Erchul (Group Golf Manager - Pacific Dunes), and all the staff at Pacific Dunes for their great work in preparation and running of the tournament.

Deaf Sports Australia Launches New Website

Deaf Sports Australia (DSA) is pleased to launch its' new website www.deafsports.org.au

DSA has worked with Dean Hecker, a professional web designer, for several months to develop a new and refreshed site that caters for the needs of DSA Members and the general public.

Apart from his expertise in web design, Dean is also a well known deaf sportsperson who is one of a select few people internationally to have competed in both the Summer and Winter Deaflympic Games.

www.deafsports.org.au utilises the latest website technology and will feature news and information on athletes, events, sports, DSA members, publications, what is happening at DSA and much more.

Deaf Sports Australia President Brent Phillips says the aim of the new website is to improve DSA's communication with its members and stakeholders.

"The website is DSA's primary form of communication with the public and the improvements we have made will provide a better user experience for visitors to the website and will help to lift the profile of DSA," Mr Phillips said.

"With the 2009 Deaflympics to be held in Taipei in September the new website will also be a vital tool to allow us to provide the latest results and information on the Australian Deaflympic Team as they come to hand," Mr Phillips said.

The website will always be a work in progress with new information, fact sheets and news releases loaded on a regular basis. The aim is to make the website a one-stop shop for all information related to deaf sports and participation for deaf and hard of hearing athletes.

DSA welcome any feedback on the new website. Please direct your comments to DSA Manager Craig Dodson at craig.dodson@deafsports.org.au or (03) 9473 1191 (voice).
