For over 40 years, John’s voluntary involvement with deaf people and community was extensive and included Deaf organisations at local, state, national and international levels.
His sporting life started as an athlete in basketball and football (AFL) and first committee role was Secretary of Victorian Deaf Basketball club in 1961. While passionate about the rights of deaf people throughout his life, his love of sport and commitment to participation equality (in all levels) was where he excelled in his leadership roles.
In 1968, he became General Secretary of the Australian Deaf Sport Federation (now Deaf Sport Australia) and in 1985 took on the role of President until 1995. In 1981, he joined the Board of Comite International des Sports des Sourds (now International Committee of Sports for the Deaf) and served as Vice President (1985) until he became President in 1995 until his passing in 2003.
He was a great ambassador for the Australian and World Deaf community and universally respected. He was awarded the distinguished Order of Australia medal in 1986, CISS medal of honour – gold in 1993 and the Edward Miner Gallaudet Award from Gallaudet University, USA in 1999.
“I have enjoyed my time attending many events to watch deaf people play sports for their country. While I am aware, my role as President has provided a service to the Deaf community, it is also something that I loved doing and has given me much joy.” (2001)
