This weekend on Sunday 2 April 2023, Deaf Sports Australia will pilot the Deaf AFL 9s event in East Malvern, Victoria.
Working with the AFL and AFL Victoria, the event involves deaf and hard of hearing players from ages 16 and up. It will be a fun and learning experience to test the possibility of an AFL 9s competition between deaf and hard of hearing people in the future, including national carnival options.
The aim of the AFL Project is to grow AFL participation pathways for deaf and hard of hearing Australians. The initiative would also create new opportunities for D/HoH people to take up AFL as part of their daily lives, provide inclusion and awareness workshops to officials and volunteers as well as accessing other unique pathways where fitting.
